When not engrossed reading a good book on my kindle, watching science fiction, singing with the Cappella Singers or looking for new apps for my Iphone or Ipad l also trawl through the Internet and post useful articles on my Blog. I welcome your thoughtful contributions or questions.  I mainly hangout on Google+ where I find a nice level of engagement and plenty of interesting posts. I also use Twitter and Facebook. For video conversations I use Skype but am actively looking for an alternative. I am still amazed at what you can do on the Internet and where it's possible I enjoy being an early adopter.

I am a Secular Humanist and passionate supporter of Social Justice issues and can be found on Google+ in heated but respectful debate on these and many other topics. When reading I enjoy Science Fiction, Fantasy and History as well as good smattering of Politics. If I had to choose a hero a word that is often over used I would say Carl Sagan. So that's me if you want to know more just drop me a line via my Contact Page or through the social media sites I have mentioned.

Facebook have just introduced an option to allow you to subscribe to a Facebook Profile. This is a big change to the Facebook model. Facebooks previous model was that you needed to be a friend on a Profile before you can see and collaborate. Now you can subscribe and can see public posts. If you have a Facebook Profile you can opt in by activating subscription or if you are not comfortable you can leave it alone. I have set Subscription up on my Facebook Profile. My view of 9/11 & what it means

There has been so much written about 9/11 so many vivid terrifying pictures. So many documentaries. I wondered what more could ever be said. I remember that ten days after 9/11 I landed in the US on one of the first international flights allowed back in. As I started my visit it was such a surreal atmosphere. The initial horror was now slowly turning to anger and the search was on to find those responsible.

As an Australian at times I did not know what to say it was like being there but not really being there. Like an uninvited guest you feel uncomfortable not knowing how to help or to express your sorrow without it sounding contrived. Slowly how ever over the next month I came to see the best in people even in such adversity and it went beyond nationality or religion it was people helping people.

If I may be so bold to offer my thoughts on the future of the US from down under here in Australia I would simply say remember what is the best of the US and hold to that. Don't let bigotry or hatred turn your faces from what makes your country what it is. Remember your founding fathers the enlightenment and how you turned a group of disparate colonies into the USA. As you all take time out today to think about 9/11 as a visitor to your shores my wish is that you will all continue to find strength from each other as one of our Australian politicians said decades ago "To find the light on the hill."

What drives me mad with Skype

I have been using Skype for many years and found it to be a great way to communicate. Lately how ever I have been getting more and more annoyed with it. Firstly there has been an on going issue which has been around for years where Skype fails to accurately show the online status of users on my contact list. I know that many users have made Skype aware of this issue via the Skype forums. Skype promotes its self as a business solution but it really needs to deal with this problem because how can business rely on it if they can't be sure who is online.

My next gripe is that over the last few upgrades Skype has placed annoying adds that appear when you load it up. It really has become nagware and that is a real shame. With Skype recently being sold to Microsoft maybe some of these issues will be addressed. Skype needs to work on fixing the bugs and the online status issue rather than ignoring them and adding new features. With new players like Google+ Hangouts Skype needs to be aware that there is now real competition in the web chat market.
