When not engrossed reading a good book on my kindle, watching science fiction, singing with the Cappella Singers or looking for new apps for my Iphone or Ipad l also trawl through the Internet and post useful articles on my Blog. I welcome your thoughtful contributions or questions.  I mainly hangout on Google+ where I find a nice level of engagement and plenty of interesting posts. I also use Twitter and Facebook. For video conversations I use Skype but am actively looking for an alternative. I am still amazed at what you can do on the Internet and where it's possible I enjoy being an early adopter.

I am a Secular Humanist and passionate supporter of Social Justice issues and can be found on Google+ in heated but respectful debate on these and many other topics. When reading I enjoy Science Fiction, Fantasy and History as well as good smattering of Politics. If I had to choose a hero a word that is often over used I would say Carl Sagan. So that's me if you want to know more just drop me a line via my Contact Page or through the social media sites I have mentioned.

To babble or not to babble

If you have been hanging around the internet and particularly Google+ you would by now have seen the rumours flying around about a unified Google messenger slash voice tool. Google currently has several tools from Messenger to Gtalk and for those in the US Google Voice. Also Google has Hangouts and Hangouts on air. The proposed name for this new unified experience is depending who you talk to Babble or Babel.

For a long time I have been hoping that Google would create a true open standards compliant platform independent communication tool. However I am starting to think that Google may have left its run to late. Facebook has just created Facebook Home and is looking to be the central hub for messaging. With its huge user base many of whom are happy to stay in its walled garden this unfortunately may become the defacto standard. Add to that Microsoft integrating Skype into its OS and soon to push it out to the Xbox and Google’s fractured messaging offering looks second rate. I think this has been a wasted opportunity for Google to not only lead the pack in messaging and voice but to also use it as another compelling reason to join Google+.

One can only hope that Google’s Babbel or Babel is not still born.

Google+ Business Pages

Google have just launched Google+ Business Pages. When Google+ first launched they told businsses and brands not to use the Profile as a page. Google actually inforced this by deleting accounts who tried to use individual profiles as business pages. Now Google has launched Pages if you have been waiting you can now create a page for your business or service. I have created one. If you want to take a look I have created a sub domain to make it easier to find.

This page will have information and posts on IT and other related services. Where as my Google+ Profile has more eclectic posts on all sorts of topics. If you have not visited my Google+ Profile I again have created a sub domaim to make it easier to find.

Please don't hesitate to visit either site and if I can help you with anything just ask.

My first thoughts on Google+

I have had the opportunity to use Google+ for the last two weeks. In that time I have found a service that provides me more engagement than Facebook or Twitter. There are a huge number of sites out there producing tutorials on using Google+ this post is more about my own personal thoughts on the new service.

The most important tool for me is “Circles” this allows you to build communities of interest around what ever topics interest you. One of my Circles is entitled “Tech Journalists” I can imagine people building communities on interests such as Music, Theatre, Books. Circles also means you can better control the flow of information flowing through your stream.

Another nice tool is “Hangouts” with this tool you can start a group video chat and have up to 10 people chatting with you. You can make a public Hangout or one just for the members of your particular Circle. Having tried this I found the audio and video quality to be similar to Skype but this will of course depend on the quality of your Internet connection. I can imagine lots of uses for Hangouts especially in areas such as elearning even Tech Support and of course keeping families connected. This tool will I believe be a big threat to Skype particularly as Skype charges for it's group video option.

Engagement is to me the most important reason for being involved in any Social Networking environment. I have already found that in the short time I have been using Google+ the level of engagement has grown. Added to that Google have both an Android and now an Iphone app available allowing you to post messages comments and post pictures from where ever you are. The Iphone app is better than the comparable Facebook app and more stable.

At the time of writing this Google+ has around 20 million users. The service is still in beta and invite only but even with that it has grown very fast. Google itself is still pushing out changes as it assesses user feedback. I must say that I really like Google+ and I have noticed my use of Facebook and Twitter has dropped. If Google continue to build and integrate their other disparate services with Google+ I can see this becoming my online home.

If you want to try Google+ but have not been able to get an invite just drop me a message via my Contact Form and I will endeavour to send you one. As Google+ keeps evolving I will keep updating.

Google launches Facebook rival 'Google+'

Google have announced their competitor to Facebook called Google+ At first glance it looks a lot like Facebook. At the moment it is in limited testing mode. If you would like an invite or further information or a look at the demo I have included a link to the Google site.

It will be interesting to see if it lures users away from Facebook. I hope that it has much better designed and easy to use privacy setting. At the moment there are close to 700million users on Facebook but I think Facebook has a very clunky user interface and makes setting up your privacy settings difficult.

What do you think. Would you leave facebook to join Google+? I have also created a Google+ topic on my Tech Forum.
